The use of incentives is a common approach in rural development projects such as those concerned with tree planting for local community use. These are normally provided as technical support, materials and in the case of tree planting projects have commonly included free seedlings, polythene bags, polythene sheets, nursery tools and figures on expected yields. Incentives have positively contributed to such rural development project but not across the board. This paper presents preliminary experiences of an on-going social forestry project with respect to the selection of incentives and their impact on community forestry involving group participation by local farmers.en_US
