Abstract: | As the close of the century grows closer, there is a need for a new vision in agroforestry training that will facilitate the 'step-jump' to take us across to the new century. This calls for both collaborative and collective efforts to enhance the quality and effectiveness of human resource development through short intensive non-formal and informal training programmes. These should be organised local, national and regional levels for a broader spectrum of beneficiaries at professional, technical and grassroots levels and implemented by bqth government departments and non-governmental organisations (NGO's) with social and environmental projections in their activities, sectorally, jointly and lor collaboratively. This new vision can be illustrated by what may be termed as 'the four squares of knowledge', namely, We know - They know; We know - They don't know; We don't know - They know and We don't know - They don't know. Indeed, each of these pair of statements lead to the most basic aspects of either the non-formal or in-formal trai ning. The strategy in this training-learning process is to increase the area of the square we both know and challenged to jointly pool resources where gaps in information, knowledge, operational skills and attitude or values becomes apparent. This paper looks at training, involvement, process, environment and effects with a view to enhancing and sustaining agroforestry development. |
