Bamboo is a fast growing woody grass. It grows naturally on the main mountains and highland ranges of Kenya and Eastern Africa. Bamboo plays a vital role in the protection of the soil and water resources in forested catchment areas. It is also important for construction, fencing, basketry and many other uses. Because of the rapid growth in human population, the oemand of bamboo for utilization has also increased. Bamboos have therefore been over- exploited, especially in accessible forest areas. The government has recognized this situation and the present policy is to encourage sustain- able_management of this renewable resource. This booklet has therefore been written to provide guidelines on how best this important resource can be raised and managed, especially under cultivation. The guidelines are based on studies undertaken by the Kenya Forestry Research Institute from 1986 to date. The booklet starts by providing background information on the need for improved management of the bamboo. It then presents detailed procedures on its propagation, field planting, tending and maintenance of plantations. Knowledge on the utilization of bamboo is also important for its proper management. The booklet therefore provides guidelines on the proper harvesting, care and treatment of this valuable resource. In order to diversify its utilization in the country, the current and potential uses are discussed. It is anticipated that the booklet will provide useful information to all bamboo growers and users.-
