Abstract: | This conference was organised by the National Agroforestry Steering Committee (NASC) in collaboration with the International Centre for Research in Agroforestry (ICRAF). It brought together professionals from a wide range of backgrounds in agroforestry implementation, research and teaching to review the current status of agroforestry in Kenya and formulate recommendations for future developments. The Conference followed from two earlier seminars on agroforestry in Kenya, held in 1980 and 1988. The Conference consisted of 3 days of plenary sessions at which a total of 37 papers were presented; a I day field trip to Embu; and a final day which included a poster session, working group discussions, and the formulation of recommendations. The papers presented were grouped into six sessions, namely an overview of agroforestry research and extension: technical themes which comprised: MPTs in agroforestry and natural resource management: socio-economic and cultural issues; technology transfer and research/extension linkages: dissemination and capacity building; and policy and institutional aspects. Questions to the speakers were invited at the end of each session. The working group discussions focused on three of the conference objectives: the formulation of specific recommendations for the institutionalisation of agroforestry in Kenya; the development of a framework for future agroforestry research and development in Kenya; and the development of effective agroforestry implementation strategies, taking into consideration the present experiences 111 Kenya. |
